Perform a backstroke start then butterfly kick in a streamlined position under water up to a maximum of 15 metres from the start point (wall), transfer into stroke and complete the remainder of the 25 metres.
a. Grip the bar and start in a curled position with legs and arms bent, feet placed on the wall.
b. Push off with the legs and throw the head backwards.
c. Ideally the whole body should come out of the water, but for younger swimmers the back at least should clear the water at one point.
d. A tight streamlined position (see above) will be maintained under the water on back or side.
e. The swimmer should travel a maximum of 15 metres before the head breaks the surface.
f. Once the swimmer has broken the surface they will continue swimming backstroke.
g. The swimmer will end with a finish.
